Our story, 79 years in Alamo Heights

Same water since 1948.

Since 1948, Heights Pool has been Alamo Heights’ sunny oasis, where friendships grow and summer memories are made.

It’s not just a pool. It’s the neighborhood’s gathering place. We’d love to welcome your family into the story.

Opening Splash Day, July 15

A day of diving contests, races and clowns.

The pool opened on July 15, 1948, with diving competitions, swimming races, clowns and water pageantry. That first day set the tone: a place for the whole neighborhood to show up and get wet.

Saved by The Pool Guy

The city-run pool was set to be filled in.

Thirty-four years ago, the city-run pool was set to be filled in. Rick Shaw, known to everyone as “The Pool Guy”, saved it. He had swum here as a boy in the late 1950s.

After a yearlong closure, the pool reopened in the summer of 1990, repainted and upgraded. Today his daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Clayton Smaistrla, carry on his legacy with the same passion and community spirit.

“Rick has preserved what it means to be neighborly.”
